A free ChatGPT checker and GPT detector
This ChatGPT checker works on anything you can paste: essays, homework answers, emails, cover letters, reviews and blog posts. It acts as a general GPT detector too, so text from GPT-4o, GPT-5 and other OpenAI models is scored the same way. Because it looks at how the writing behaves rather than at a list of known outputs, it also flags text from Claude, Gemini and other chatbots.
ChatGPT’s writing fingerprints
Every model has habits. ChatGPT’s are familiar to anyone who has read a lot of its output, and they’re the patterns this detector weighs most heavily:
- Signature vocabulary: “delve,” “tapestry,” “testament,” “realm,” “navigate,” “crucial,” “robust,” “seamless.”
- Framing openers: “In today’s fast-paced world,” “In the ever-evolving landscape of…”
- Hedged balance: every claim softened, every point paired with a counterpoint, no clear opinion.
- Groups of three: “fast, efficient, and reliable.”
- Heavy formatting: bolded lead-ins, bullet lists and headings where a paragraph would do.
- The recap ending: “In conclusion…” or “Ultimately…” followed by a summary of the text you just read.
- Email tells: “I hope this email finds you well” and “Please don’t hesitate to reach out.”
One tell is never enough; plenty of people write “crucial.” The detector looks at how many patterns appear together and how evenly the text is built, which is far more telling than any single word.
ChatGPT vs. other AI models
Claude, Gemini and Llama share most of these habits, with their own variations. Because the detector models those shared traits, the same check works for all of them. You can use this page as a ChatGPT checker, or the general AI detector for any model.
Using a ChatGPT detector fairly
If you’re a teacher or manager, remember that a ChatGPT detector estimates likelihood. It does not prove authorship. Talk to the writer, ask about their process and look at drafts before making a decision. Our guide on AI detector accuracy explains the known failure cases, including the higher false positive rates for non-native English writers.
Wrote it with ChatGPT and need it to sound like you?
If you use ChatGPT for drafts, run the text through the AI humanizer to remove these patterns, then add your own details. Check the result here before you publish.
ChatGPT detector FAQ
How can I tell if something was written by ChatGPT?
Common signs include very even sentence lengths, stacked transitions such as 'Moreover' and 'Furthermore', favorite words like 'delve', 'tapestry' and 'robust', tidy lists of three, and endings that recap the whole text. Paste the text into a ChatGPT detector for a probability score and highlighted sentences, then read the flagged parts yourself.
Can this detector recognize GPT-5 and GPT-4o?
Yes. The detector looks for the writing habits shared by OpenAI's models rather than a single version's fingerprint, so it works on text from GPT-5, GPT-4o, GPT-4 and earlier ChatGPT versions. It also detects Claude, Gemini and other models.
Can ChatGPT tell if it wrote something?
Asking ChatGPT 'did you write this?' is not reliable. Chatbots do not keep a record of everything they have generated, and they will often answer confidently either way. OpenAI retired its first public AI text classifier in 2023 because of its low accuracy. Use a dedicated detector and treat any result as a probability.
Is the ChatGPT detector free?
Yes. Check up to 2,000 words at a time with no account or payment.
What if text was written by ChatGPT and then edited?
Light edits usually leave enough patterns for the detector to flag. Heavy rewriting by a person makes AI text much harder to detect, for any tool. The sentence highlights help you see which parts still look generated.
