AI checker vs. plagiarism checker
They answer different questions, and you often need both.
| AI checker | Plagiarism checker | |
|---|---|---|
| Question it answers | Was this written by AI? | Was this copied from somewhere? |
| How it works | Analyzes writing style, predictability and sentence patterns | Compares text against web pages, papers and databases |
| Catches AI text? | Yes, that’s its purpose | Rarely, because AI output is usually original |
| Result | AI probability with highlighted sentences | Similarity percentage with matching sources |
How to get a reliable AI check
- Check enough text. Aim for 150 words or more of continuous prose. Very short answers don’t carry enough signal.
- Remove what the author didn’t write. Strip out block quotes, reference lists, tables and code before checking.
- Check one author at a time. Group work mixes several voices and muddies the result.
- Read the highlights, not just the number. The sentences that are flagged tell you far more than the headline score.
- Compare with known writing. A student’s or writer’s earlier work is the best baseline you have.
What to do if your writing is flagged as AI
Being flagged doesn’t mean you did anything wrong. Detectors respond to patterns, and some honest writing shares them. If your own text comes back as likely AI:
- Look at the highlighted sentences. They usually share a pattern, such as even length or generic phrasing.
- Rewrite those sentences in your own words and add concrete details only you would know.
- Keep your drafts, notes and document version history. They are the strongest evidence of your writing process.
- If you used AI for parts of the work, our AI humanizer can help those parts read naturally, but follow your school’s or employer’s rules on disclosing AI assistance.

AI checker FAQ
What is an AI checker?
An AI checker is a tool that reviews a piece of writing and estimates whether it was produced by an AI model such as ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini. AI Humanizer Detector's AI checker gives an overall AI probability and highlights individual sentences, so you can see which parts of the text drive the result.
How do I check if text is AI-generated?
Paste at least 25 words (ideally 150 or more) into the AI checker and click Check for AI. You get an AI probability for the whole text, a verdict, and highlights on the sentences that read most like AI. Read the highlighted sentences alongside the score, because the pattern of flagged sentences tells you more than the number alone.
Is the AI checker free to use?
Yes. The AI checker is free, requires no account and checks up to 2,000 words per scan.
What is the difference between an AI checker and a plagiarism checker?
A plagiarism checker compares your text against existing sources to find copied passages. An AI checker looks at how the text is written to estimate whether a machine generated it. AI-generated text is usually original, so it often passes a plagiarism check while still being flagged by an AI checker. Many teachers and editors run both.
Can teachers use this AI checker for student essays?
Yes, and the sentence highlights make it practical for feedback. Use the score as a starting point for a conversation rather than as proof. Short answers, formulaic assignments and work by English language learners can be misread by any AI checker, so compare against the student's other writing and drafts before drawing conclusions.
How many words do I need for an accurate check?
The checker needs at least 25 words, but results are much more reliable from about 150 words upward. For long documents, check a few representative sections of 300 to 1,000 words each.
Why was my human-written essay flagged as AI?
Polished, formulaic writing can resemble AI output: very even sentence lengths, textbook transitions and generic phrasing. The highlighted sentences show where. Adding specific examples, varying your sentence length and writing in your own voice usually brings the score down. Keep your drafts and edit history as evidence of your process.
Does the AI checker work on text that was translated or paraphrased?
It can analyze any text, but machine translation and paraphrasing tools change writing patterns in ways that make any AI check less certain. Treat results on translated or heavily paraphrased text with extra caution.
