What the AI essay checker looks for
Essays written by AI share habits that go beyond word choice. The checker weighs signals like these:
- A thesis that covers every angle. AI essays tend to argue “both sides” evenly and avoid a committed position.
- Body paragraphs built from one template. Topic sentence, explanation, example, wrap-up, repeated with the same rhythm each time.
- Generic evidence. “Studies show” and “experts agree” without a specific study, text or class discussion.
- Stock transitions and conclusions. “Furthermore,” “Moreover,” and a final paragraph that begins “In conclusion” and restates the introduction.
- Even sentence length. Human essays mix short, punchy sentences with longer ones. AI essays rarely do.
How reliable is the check for each essay type?
| Essay type | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Argumentative and persuasive essays | Reliable on 300+ words. Formulaic structure can push scores up even when the writing is human. |
| Personal statements and college essays | Usually reliable. Specific personal detail is strong evidence of human writing. |
| Literature reviews and research papers | Less reliable. Dense citations and summaries of sources read as uniform. Check sections without long quotations. |
| Lab reports and technical writing | Less reliable. Fixed conventions such as methods sections read the same whoever writes them. |
| Short answers and discussion posts | Unreliable under about 150 words. There isn't enough text to judge. |
For students: check before you submit
Run your essay through the checker before it goes to your instructor. If sentences are highlighted, rewrite them with something only you could say: a quotation you chose, a point from a lecture, your own reasoning. Submitting to Turnitin? See our pre-submission Turnitin AI check for what to expect.
For teachers: use the results fairly
- Check at least 300 words of the student’s own prose, without quotations or the reference list.
- Read the highlighted sentences. Do they match the student’s usual voice and level?
- Compare with in-class writing or earlier assignments.
- Ask the student about their process and look at drafts or version history before deciding anything.

AI essay checker FAQ
What is an AI essay checker?
An AI essay checker analyzes an essay and estimates whether it was written by AI tools such as ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini. This one gives the whole essay an AI percentage and highlights the sentences that read most like AI, so students can revise before submitting and teachers can see what to ask about.
Is the AI essay checker free?
Yes. It's free with no account, and it checks up to 2,000 words at a time, which covers most essays. For longer papers, check one section at a time.
Does it grade my essay or check grammar?
No. It checks whether the writing reads as AI-generated. It doesn't grade your essay, mark grammar or check for plagiarism. For a plagiarism check, use your institution's tool alongside this one.
How accurate is an AI essay detector?
No AI detector is completely accurate. Results are most reliable on long, continuous prose and least reliable on short answers, heavily cited work and writing by non-native English speakers. Treat the score as a prompt to look more closely, not as proof.
Should teachers use AI essay checkers for grading decisions?
Not on their own. A detector score is one indicator. Compare it with the student's earlier work, look at drafts and version history, and talk to the student before drawing any conclusion. Most detector makers, including Turnitin, give the same advice.
Why is my college essay showing as AI?
Polished application and admission essays are often heavily edited, which can smooth out the natural variation detectors look for. Generic openings, inspirational conclusions and formulaic structure add to it. Specific memories, concrete detail and your own way of saying things lower the score and make the essay stronger.
